One of the great things I love about working from home is the simple fact that you don’t have to go anywhere to get to work.
As a matter of fact I am writing this sitting on the couch, barefoot, in my fuzzy housecoat, with my second cup of coffee precariously balanced on the cushion beside me.
The other part that’s great is you get to (mostly) schedule your own day.
Starting a Business from Home
Starting a business is a simple as deciding that you want to be in business. There – say it – “I’m a business person!” Now say it with conviction. At this moment worrying about incorporating or not isn’t really necessary. AND that is a conversation to have with your tax advisor.
Are you trading a service or a product? For example a service could be a specialized trades like electrical or plumbing. Another type of service is digital like web development or marketing services.
You can also start a business for selling physical products on Amazon or eBay from home. Selling products online doesn’t have to be used. There are companies that offer dropshipping or you can help local retailers expand their market by putting their products online for them.
So – what do you want to trade for the money you will get?
Once you decide that, you will have to find out what the laws are in your country. There may be restrictions or zoning issues. If your service or product is digital you may or may not be required to collect taxes on your sales.
Getting Started with No Money
At-home business’s are often started by people who really don’t have the capital to have a big store, buy a tonne of inventory, or even market their business. Don’t worry there are lots of free ways to start.
The old adage is true though, if you don’t have the money then you have to put in the time. For example if you are starting a landscaping business and can’t afford to advertise then you will have to go door to door introducing yourself and your new service. Put up flyers in you local grocery billboard and other places that have free community billboards.
You can draw attention to your business by doing something newsworthy like giving free haircuts to veterans or seniors.
If you have an online type of business you can advertise free online using CraigsList and other advertising platforms. Websites are also free – although I would recommend you upgrade to a paid website as soon as you can.
The first place to make your business known would be in the Google Business directory. This will give you a business listing in the search.
Starting an Online Business
The type of business you start will depend on the time you are willing to devote to it. If you are looking for a more passive business that will produce an income whether you worked or not then you need to know about or be willing to learn about ways to make passive income.
The service business or production business where you trade time or products for money has a different set of rules.
One of the first things to do is to decide on what niche you want to be in. Don’t worry about getting married to it either. It isn’t unusual to start out in one niche and end up sliding into another. Most people don’t take any action at all until they are sure they have everything right and won’t fail. You will fail – so get going!
By taking action you will more quickly see what the marketplace wants. For example; 20 years ago I started a home-cleaning business on the side because I needed some extra cash. Because of my willingness to listen and (here is the big key to success)
Don’t worry about the niche you pick and be willing to morph with demands.
