Bluehost is another favourite among bloggers. Similar to Hostgator they also provide unlimited storage, email accounts, bandwidth, and as many subdomains as you can eat.
I used to have a Pro Account with them a couple of years ago but no longer do. My sites were still being CPU throttled and they loaded much slower than I felt the extra pricing warranted. I moved my “Pro” sites over to Synthesis so they could handle the traffic better. At least I can sleep better at night because I didn’t see a whole lot of “Pro” benefits for the additional pricing at Bluehost.
I do still manage websites at Bluehost on the regular hosting accounts and things seem to be running smoothly.
Bluehost Discount Coupon
They may still be a little more expensive than their cousin Hostgator but you can plug in this discount offer BH75OFF for a 75% savings.
Unlike Hostgator – Bluehost doesn’t allow for monthly payments. When you sign up you are signing up for a full year. If you want the advertised discount you need to sign up for THREE years. They do have a money-back anytime guarantee though.
Bluehost Customer Support
When I had a Pro account I was calling them fairly often. Their support staff was friendly but not particularly helpful. I think they wanted to help but were unable to because of the limitations of their own servers.
This only made my decision to move my pro accounts elsewhere. The sites that I currently manage for clients that are on their regular hosting accounts are just fine. They don’t get the heavy traffic and there have been no major issues.
Their support staff are all local and work in-house at their Utah office’s. The wait time is usually very short and they are really nice.
Their FTP works fine for small to medium uploads and there has never been any issues with corrupt or lost files.
They have a good selection of “how to” videos and extensive knowledge base – including a user forum – so you can find out how to do most things on your own.
They do have some analytics capabilities. It is interesting to see how many times a day your site gets hit with ‘bots’. The analytics is weak compared to other alternatives but it’s free.
To get your new website listed in the search engines Bluehost does offer a submission service. Like most of the other hosting companies they also offer free Google AdWords coupons as well as other promotions.
For eCommerce they have SSL secure server and several shopping carts to choose from. They also have password protected directory but you can do this yourself without a secure server by following these steps.
Bluehost has been around since 1996 so they do know a thing or two. They have also been through the many changes and upgrades and continue to do so. Today they have over 2 Million websites on their servers around the world.
On the technical side they actually build their own servers. Many smaller hosting business’s just “borrow” server space from other company’s. Bluehost also has their own fibre network and create their own Linux kernel. This means they take care of EVERYTHING themselves.
